Ottawa Diaries: Management&Medicine
After Toronto Healthcare MBA participants moved to Ottawa where they started from the visit to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital, leading medical facility in the area close to Ottawa. The hospital has 450 employees, is accredited by Canadian Council on Health Services and has an operating budget of 34 mio Canadian Dollars.
Mr. Randy Penny, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital delivered the presentation with the special focus on corporate governance issues. He explained in detail the role of the board of Directors and how they establish strategic priorities, e.g. construction of the new therapy department building. The group also discussed budgeting and staffing processes. After that MIM-Kyiv participants had a tour of the hospital.
The group also had lunch with Ms. Sandra J. (Sandi) Heins, the Mayor of the town of Renfrew who told the participants how important the hospital is and how they develop the relationship with it.
Most of the visits were of the same pattern – a good blend of the managerial and medical content. Among the most unusual and different from the Ukraine’s national public health were Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre and Royal Ottawa Health Care Group.
